Geir Wing Gabrielsen estimates that if things continue in the
same rate as now, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in
the ocean. Birds are already dying as a consequence of having
plastic in their stomachs, and animals living in the sea and by the
shore can get tangeled in nets and other plastic products.
Although a somber topic, the talk was very informative, and
everyone, from scouts to scientists, listened with great interest
during what is believed to be the largest lecture ever held in the
history of Ny-Ålesund.
Luckily, the new conference halls were built for occasions like
these, with all the new furniture and electronical equipment
finally being put to use. We are looking forward to countless more
seminars and lectures in the new halls!
