The minister of Climate and Environment, Vidar Helgesen, visited Ny-Ålesund on Monday the 8th of May. During his visit he unveiled the first pile of the foundation of the new science building. The construction of the building itself will continue throughout the year and will be completed in 2018.
Many of the town's inhabitants turned up for the event, and everyone enjoyed a nice glass of bubbles in the beautiful weather. The minister also provided some other good news - the department has decided to allocate extra funds to Kings Bay, which will be used to upgrade the Service building.
The minister also went on a short snowmobile trip, as well as a visit the top of the Zeppelin mountain during his visit.
All in all, a beautiful and eventful liberation day!
