14th of December 1916, the company Kings Bay Coal Company was founded. 100 years later, the company is still going strong, and has made the transition from coal mining to facility provider for research. Kings Bay celebrates the aniversary with lectures and aniversary dinners, both in Oslo and Ny-Ålesund.
The celebrations started on Tuesday December 6th with a lecture of the history of Kings Bay by Per Kyrre Reymer in Kongsfjordhallen in Ny-Ålesund. On December 7th, everybody in Ny-Ålesund was invited to a seven course dinner in the mess hall. Among the invited guests were the Director General from the Directorate for Cultural Heritage Jørn Holme, historian and Dr.Med. Rolf Hanoa, the leader of the Kings Bay Veterans, and the members of the Kings Bay Board.
Earlier in the afternoon, author Rolf Hanoa launched his book, "Kings Bay AS - 1916-2016", at Kongsfjordhallen. The book takes a comprehensive look at the company's history, and will be in sale in stores very soon.
The celebrations continued in Oslo on December 13th and 14th. A research seminar, organized jointly with the Research Council of Norway was followed by a celebratory dinner at Fram Museum in Oslo.
