The Norwegian constitutional bicentenary on May 17th was celebrated in true Ny-Ålesund style. The day started as early as 0630 a.m., when Ny-Ålesund Slag & Blæs in a traditional fashion and defying snow and icy winds, did their utmost to wake people up as un-musically as possible. A great success, counting by the number of people who joined in the morning parade to the Amundsen villa for an early champagne breakfast. As the day wore on the sun decided to give it a try. By the time of the balloon launch, the big parade through town was blessed with beautiful sunshine. And a lot of happy people!
At Mellageret Pub, the final destination of the parade, everyone in town gathered for hot-dogs & ice cream. Åsne, the May 17th committee leader, held an inspired and informative speech of the day. An international crowd of N-Å inhabitants, visiting scientists and other guests also seemed to enjoy the extra-super-good dinner provided by our excellent kitchen in the Dining hall, later in the evening.
For many, the day ended at Mellageret Pub, dancing happily to DJ Guiseppe's choice of music.
