Photo: Anne Merete BekkevahrIt is a Ny-Ålesund tradition that scouts come to town, working for room and board for a few, intense summer weeks. The scouts are truly industrious, working from 8 am - 8. pm all weekdays, spending whatever leftover energy they have on hiking trips in the weekends.
This year, the fourteen scouts did a great job conducting a general cleanup of town and a much needed cleaning of all windows in the Service building. But the main task this year was painting various buildings in Ny-Ålesund; the hotel, the power station, the Samfunnshus, the mechanical workshop, Gruvebadet and Blue House.
The scouts who come to Ny-Ålesund are hand-picked, and come from all over Norway. On their last day in town, they were invited to celebrate work well done in a small gathering in the Amundsen villa.
Wikipedia on Scouting: "Scouting (or the Scout Movement) is a movement that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills".
